Public Transportation in Kuala Lumpur

Renting your own car or taxi can be quite pricey, so if your plan is to travel around the city, you can always opt for public transportation instead.

1. KL Monorail, Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) & KTM
These train systems are very convenient as it takes you to different spots in the city rather quickly and also do not cost much. Station signage are also easy to understand so you do not have to worry about getting on the wrong train.
- Tickets can be bought at the stations before every ride that you take.
- Alternatively, if you foresee yourself travelling with these train systems a lot, you can head over to some convenience stores and get yourself a Touch ‘n Go card, which serves like a ticket for every time that you board a train. To use them, you only have to reload value into the card, and then scan the card on the sensor provided in every station before and after you board a train.
Tip: Do check the balance value in your card, and top up more value by buying them in convenience stores if it is not sufficient for you to make your next trip.
-The main intercity railway station is KL Sentral and it is where you can switch between different forms of train systems.

2. GOKL Buses
The GOKL buses are free buses in the city of Kuala Lumpur that can take you to several attractions such as the KL Tower or Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). These buses can be identified as purple buses, and if you’re still unsure about whether or not it is the right bus, you can see the word GOKL on them.

3. Hop On Hop Off Buses
The Hop On Hop Off buses are double-decker buses that drives around the city of Kuala Lumpur, stopping at several attractions in the city. Unlike the GOKL buses, these buses would require tickets that you can buy online, in the buses itself, or from their counters. There are two types of tickets - 24 hours and 48 hours. You can hop on or hop off these buses anytime as long as they are still operating.

4. RapidKL Buses
RapidKL Buses are buses operated by the largest bus operator in Malaysia, Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd. You will have to buy tickets which costs approximately MYR0.80-MYR3, depending on the distance that you will be travelling in these buses. The tickets are bought from the drivers of the bus once you get in. However, there are certain buses that do not sell tickets anymore, and require you to use your Touch ‘n Go cards instead.

Tip 1: You pay slightly less by using the Touch ‘n Go cards in these buses.

Tip 2: If you are planning to buy tickets, make sure to have your own small change as most of the time the drivers will not have enough change for you. However, it is still better to get a Touch ‘n Go card as some buses will only accept payments via these cards.

Renting vehicles to drive by yourself might sound appealing to you, but you might want to be mindful of the motorcyclists and other drivers, as some might not give you signals before turning or changing lanes abruptly. Also, Kuala Lumpur, especially near the Bukit Bintang area, tend to be congested during certain hours, such as before and after working hours on weekdays, so you might want to avoid these hours to be on the road.
